WILLIAM SLOAN

  • Hair color: Dark Brown
  • Eye color: Green
  • Current occupation: I'm a stockbroker for Cooper & Scott
  • What you like best about your job: I like helping people build a solid future
  • What you like least about your job: I have the potential to be a workaholic if I'm not careful
  • Where you live: I have an apartment in Chicago
  • Favorite drink: I like a beer once in a while
  • Favorite cologne: Old Spice
  • Hobbies: None. I've spent the last few years getting my degree and finding a job, so I haven't had time for much else
  • What scares you: Failure
  • What makes you angry: Predatory people
  • Your best character trait: I'm the kind of guy who can be counted on in a crisis
  • Your biggest character flaw: Focusing so intently on work that I lose sight of what's going on around me
  • Neat or messy: Neat
  • Early riser or night owl: My job requires me to be an early riser, but I can do late nights, too
  • Home cooking or fast food: I love home cooked food, but since I don't cook, I usually order take out
  • Shirt and tie or T-shirt: Shirt and tie, although I like casual clothes when I'm not working
  • Camping or hotel suite: Hotel suite. I'm not much of an "outdoors" guy
  • Where you grew up: Springfield, Illinois
  • Describe your family: My dad is a strait-laced military man, who met my free-spirited mom in Paris. I have an older brother, Miles Jr., who unfortunately, has never been able to hold down a job for more than a few months. He takes after my mom, while I'm more like my dad. I think a big part of the reason I'm so driven to make a success of my career is to make up for the disappointment my dad feels regarding Miles
  • Your closest friend: Justin Haskell, my roommate from college
  • Most recent romantic relationship: My ex-girlfriend Helen. I really thought we were in sync, until I caught her in bed with someone else. She claimed I drove her to it by focusing too much on my career and neglecting her. I haven't really been interested in dating anyone since
  • Biggest turn ons: Self-sufficiency, determination, intelligence, and a good sense of humor
  • Biggest turn offs: Aggressive behavior, women who expect to be noticed
  • Biggest advantage of being considered a nerd: Clients trust me to look out for their best interests
  • Biggest disadvantage of being considered a nerd: I don't tend to inspire instant attraction in women

LEX MANCHESTER

  • Eye color: Blue
  • Astrological sign: Aries
  • Current occupation: I'm a private investigator
  • What you like best about your job: Not having to work for Aetna investigating insurance fraud
  • What you like least about your job: Dealing with my unreliable business partner (and best friend), Dante, on the occasions when his antics put the success of our business in jeopardy
  • Where you live: Los Angeles, California
  • Favorite drink: Martini
  • Favorite car: I drive a Toyota because it's dependable and solid, but as a kid, I wanted to be a professional race car driver, so I appreciate cars built for speed as well
  • Hobbies: Nothing specific, although I like trivia
  • What scares you: Deep water. I don't know how to swim
  • What makes you angry: Irresponsible behavior in serious situations
  • Your best character trait: I'm both analytical and dependable, so people trust me, even in tough situations. I don't take unnecessary risks
  • Your biggest character flaw: I'm not very comfortable trying new things, especially if I think I'll look like a complete idiot
  • Neat or messy: Neat. I like order

  • Best childhood memory: Hanging out at Cora Bledsoe's house with Dante while she told us stories about Marilyn Monroe, Jean Harlow, Betty Grable, and other Hollywood stars
  • Favorite childhood memento: I know it seems kind of silly, but I still have all the baseball cards I collected as a kid
  • Biggest turn ons: Intelligent women with real curves
  • Biggest turn offs: Women who only care about looks; who lack depth and integrity
  • Biggest advantage of being considered a nerd: I'm always taken seriously
  • Biggest disadvantage of being considered a nerd: Sometimes people think "reliable" translates into "boring"

CHARLIE SHEPHERD

  • Height: 6'5"
  • Hair color: Brown
  • Eye color: Brown
  • Current occupation: I'm an electrical engineer for Middlesex Light and Power
  • What you like best about your job: It pays the bills
  • What you like least about your job: The owners aren't open to new ideas or modernization
  • Future career goals: I'm interviewing for a job at Hoover Dam, and I plan to move to Las Vegas if I get it. I've dreamed about working at a major hydroelectric plant for years
  • Where you live: I have an apartment in Middlesex, Connecticut
  • Favorite drink: Sam Adams beer
  • Favorite car: None. My vehicle of choice is my Harley Davidson motorcycle. It represents freedom to me
  • Hobbies: I don't really believe in hobbies; they're a waste of time. The things that interest me that are not work-related, like shooting pool, are a science to be taken seriously, not a hobby
  • Other skills: I'm an excellent pool player. I also enjoy building and fixing things, so I help my mom and aunt with anything that breaks at their bakery. Oh, and I qualified for a private pilot's license a few years ago, although I don't fly often
  • What scares you: The thought of being stuck in a small town for the rest of my life
  • Your biggest character flaw: I'm orderly to a fault, which some people consider anal-retentive
  • Neat or messy: Neat. I prefer order to chaos
  • Early riser or night owl: Night owl, although I get up early for work
  • Home cooking or fast food: I like both
  • Shirt and tie or T-shirt: Something in-between, like jeans and a dress shirt
  • Camping or hotel suite: If you're with the right person, either will do just fine
  • Where you grew up: Right here in Middlesex. That's why I'm itching to leave
  • Describe your childhood: Lots of holiday celebrations, riding in a wagon in the 4th of July parade, all that small town stuff
  • Best childhood memory: Christmas when I was nine years old. I got an erector set, and spent countless hours building things with it. It was the best Christmas present I ever received
  • Person in your family you're closest to: My mom, especially since my dad died last year
  • Siblings: None. That's the main reason I've stayed in Middlesex so long. First my dad needed me while he was sick, and then my mom needed me after he died. There was no one else who could help take care of them
  • Most recent romantic relationship: A woman named Mariah. She thought my plan to move to Nevada was stupid, so we broke up
  • Biggest turn ons: Intelligence and creativity
  • Biggest turn offs: Women who are high maintenance, who care more about how they look than what they're doing with their lives
  • Biggest advantage of being considered a nerd: I can always get a job doing the type of work I love
  • Biggest disadvantage of being considered a nerd: I'm not often thought of as a "knight in shining armor" type, unless something electrical has broken

FLYNN GRANGER

  • Height: Six feet
  • Hair color: Brown
  • Eye color: Gray
  • Education: Law degree from Harvard
  • Current occupation: I'm an entertainment lawyer
  • What you like best about your job: I like being on the outskirts of the entertainment industry. I can watch the fun and excitement without having to be sucked into the lifestyle demands that usually come with it
  • What you like least about your job: Nothing. It suits me perfectly
  • Where you live: I own a townhouse in Pasadena
  • Favorite drink: Alcoholic? I like wine. Most of the time, though, I just drink water
  • Favorite car: My Honda Civic. Ten years old and it still runs like new
  • Favorite cologne: Aqua Velva
  • What do you hate to do without: Electronic gadgets. I bought a cell phone before they were popular, and last Christmas, Zoe gave me a titanium PDA
  • Hobbies: When I was a teenager, I was into cryptozoology and other unexplained phenomena. Now? Nothing, really
  • What scares you: Bears. Actually, anything bigger than me that might view me as dinner
  • Your biggest character flaw: I'm very practical, which some people see as a flaw. In my defense, I just don't see the point in wasting money on extravagant living when you can do just as well with something simple and serviceable. Glitz and flash have never appealed to me
  • Neat or messy: Definitely neat. Why ruin your belongings simply because you're too lazy to pick up after yourself? Besides, when things are neat, you know where to find what you need
  • Home cooking or fast food: Either. I'm just fine with a burger or hot dog, but I also appreciate a home cooked meal if someone else makes it
  • Shirt and tie or T-shirt: Shirt and tie. I'm not into appearances, but I don't want to look as if I just fell out of bed, either
  • Camping or hotel suite: Neither. A clean, moderately priced hotel room would be my choice
  • Where you grew up: A small mining town in Arizona
  • Describe your childhood: My family never had much money when I was a kid, and I was often bored living in such a small town. However, it did motivate me to build a solid career in Los Angeles after I left home
  • Best childhood memory: Being chosen as captain of the debate team in high school
  • Worst childhood memory: I played an eggplant in the elementary school play, and I forgot my line. I just stood there in the middle of the stage, frozen, until someone led me off. Ironically, I've never been able to forget that stupid line ever since. "Bake me, fry me, I'll be gone. I'm also great with Parmesan"
  • Person in your family you're closest to: My mom and dad. After the mine closed down, they opened a bed and breakfast in my hometown to make ends meet. I've tried to send them money, but they won't take it. It's a matter of pride, I guess, but I still worry about them sometimes
  • Most recent romantic relationship: My current girlfriend, Kristen. She's a law professor at Harvard, so we don't see each other very often, but I'm planning to propose to her next week when she comes out for a visit
  • Biggest problem you've had with previous romantic relationships: No passion and very little spontaneity
  • Biggest advantage of being considered a nerd: I don't have any trouble getting clients
  • Biggest disadvantage of being considered a nerd: People tend to assume I'm boring, uptight, or both

MITCHELL CARRUTHERS

  • Height: Over six feet
  • Hair color: Brown
  • Eye color: Brown
  • Age: Thirty-two
  • Education: I attended the Police Academy
  • Current occupation: Officially? I was hired as the personal assistant to Madeline Jarrett, who recently passed away, leaving millions to her granddaughter, Ally. Unofficially, I was hired by Ms. Jarrett to be Ally's bodyguard
  • What you like best about your job: Knowing I can keep Ally safe, and protect her from those who would take advantage of her
  • What you like least about your job: Lying to Ally, and having to act like the nerdy guy I struggled not to become
  • Favorite drink: In social situations, beer
  • Favorite car: I have a Harley, but since I was hired to guard Ally, I've been driving a Toyota
  • Favorite baseball team: Dodgers
  • Hobbies: Playing poker, working out to keep in shape
  • What scares you: Surprises, especially regarding Ally. I'm afraid that she may do something reckless now that she's getting a taste of personal freedom
  • What makes you angry: Anyone who tries to manipulate or take advantage of others
  • Your biggest character flaw: I guess you could call me a control freak. I don't enjoy situations where I can't control the outcome.
  • Neat or messy: Neat. It's important for my work, and it became a habit when I was a kid
  • Home cooking or fast food: Home cooking, definitely. Fast food doesn't feed the soul
  • Sun or snow: Sun! After so many years in Illinois, I can't stand the thought of cold and snow
  • Camping or hotel suite: Hotel suite. Camping involves too many unknown critters, many of whom bite
  • Early riser or night owl: Night owl
  • Where you grew up: Chicago
  • Childhood hero: Characters played by guys like Sylvester Stallone or Arnold Schwarzenegger who were big, tough, and protected innocent people from the bad guys
  • Best childhood memory: Getting my Harley at age seventeen. My dad agreed to let me keep it in exchange for my taking driving and safety classes
  • Worst childhood memory: Being a skinny kid with bad eyes, good grades, and zero appeal for the opposite sex
  • Person in your family you're closest to: My parents, who were always there for me, even when we disagreed
  • Biggest problem you've had with previous romantic relationships: I've never found a woman that I clicked with, one who shared my interests or made me want to get involved in hers
  • Biggest advantage of being considered a nerd: I can do my job
  • Biggest disadvantage of being considered a nerd: It's depressing how easily my old childhood habits have come back to me

HARRY AMBREWSTER

  • Height: 6'3"
  • Hair color: Brown
  • Age: Over thirty
  • Education: M.B.A. with honors from Stanford
  • Current occupation: Accountant
  • What you like best about your job: Being able to watch Lainie Terrell perform each night
  • What you like least about your job: Most people think accountants are boring; they may be right
  • Favorite color: Red, especially if Lainie's wearing it
  • Favorite drink: Coffee
  • Favorite car: My Lexus
  • Hobbies: Playing chess
  • What scares you: Snakes
  • What makes you angry: Bullies who prey on the weak or innocent
  • Your biggest character flaw: Spontaneity tends to scare me; chaos usually follows when I give it a try
  • Neat or messy: I like order
  • Home cooking or fast food: Home cooking, although I'm not much of a cook
  • Camping or hotel suite: A hotel suite with a large bed and room service
  • Sunrise or sunset: Sunrise
  • Where you grew up: Las Vegas. When I wasn't in school, I spent most of my time backstage at a casino where my mother danced
  • Childhood hero: My mom's boyfriend, Leo. He and Mom started dating when I was thirteen, and he pulled me out of a few bad scrapes when I was a teenager. I don't know if I would have made it through adolescence without him
  • Best childhood memory: When I was eight, I was chased home by three high school bullies who wanted to "depants" me. My mom came roaring out of the apartment and sent them running. She was fearless, and I was so proud to have her as my mom
  • Worst childhood memory: Spending a lot of time alone because I preferred intellectual games, like chess and logic puzzles, to athletic games or sports
  • Person in your family you're closest to: My mother, Rona. She raised me by herself since my dad died before I was born
  • Siblings: None. That's part of my problem. My mom is eager for me to start a family so she can have grandkids. I don't have a brother or sister who might take the pressure off me
  • Biggest problem you've had with previous romantic relationships: The women I find physically attractive are usually boring to talk to, but studious intellectuals don't tend to turn me on
  • Biggest advantage of being considered a nerd: I've never had trouble finding or keeping a job that pays well
  • Biggest disadvantage of being considered a nerd: Since the women I've dated are attracted to my mind, not my body, I don't bother keeping my muscles strong and toned, which can be embarrassing in certain situations

  • Height: 6'6"
  • Eye color: Blue
  • Age: Nearing thirty
  • Astrological sign: Taurus

  • Favorite TV show: South Park
  • Favorite movie: From Here to Eternity
  • Favorite drink: Coffee, soda; anything with tons of caffeine
  • Favorite ice cream flavor: Double chocolate fudge on a cone
  • Favorite car: My dependable Toyota Corolla
  • Most prized posession: My laptop
  • Hobbies: Hobbies? Like gardening or woodworking or something? I guess my hobby is mastering computer simulations
  • What scares you: I'm not too crazy about heights
  • What makes you angry: When people deliberately hurt others
  • What makes you laugh: The unexpected. Witty people. I like people who can surprise you with hidden depths or clever observations
  • Your biggest character flaw: I get involved with my computer and lose track of time. Sometimes I'm just late, but once I forgot a romantic evening I had planned with a woman I was dating.
  • Neat or messy: No one would accuse me of being a neat freak
  • Home cooking or fast food: I can't cook. At all
  • Camping or hotel suite: Camping sounds like fun until you realize there's no running water and no electricity. Where's the fun in that?
  • Sunrise or sunset: I never seem to catch either one
  • Where you grew up: Nebraska
  • Childhood hero: Superman. He's a smart, nice guy who also gets the girl
  • Best childhood memory: The night my grandmother let me stay up playing Donkey Kong until I beat the final level
  • Worst childhood memory: Rejecting the afghan my grandmother made for me for Christmas and telling her I wanted a Nintendo instead. She bought me the Nintendo
  • Person in your family you're closest to: My grandmother; she raised me after my parents died
  • Pets: None. I love animals, but I'm always afraid I'll forget to feed them
  • Number of previous romantic relationships: Do I have to answer that?
  • Biggest advantage of being considered a nerd: It pays really well, although most of my money winds up in my savings account
  • Biggest disadvantage of being considered a nerd: There aren't a lot of women who view me as potential boyfriend material
